Like with all things from developmental to physical, babies and toddlers do them when they are ready and each are completely different.
Moving Amelia from a cot to her big girl bed now was right for us.
A bit of background for those that don’t know I live with my parents and me and Amelia shared a room for a little bit with the intention of me moving into the spare room and Amelia keeping the bigger room. I hate to say it but Amelia was an amazing sleeper from about 3months up to just over a year. Self settling each night and sleeping through without wake ups unless she was poorly or teething. So I continued to sleep in the same room. The room transition was attempted many times and just never fully worked out and I was in two rooms for a while which was just chaos. At around 13months Amelia’s sleep routine deteriorated slowly but surely. She was waking during the night and pointing to the double bed to sleep in there. I caved as to begin with it was around 5am so I didn’t see any harm. You can probably see where I’m going with this and yes your right it got much much worse until Amelia was only doing a few hours in her cot and would happily sleep in the double bed on her own without me. What started as her wanting to be cuddled up sleeping with me was now Amelia just not wanting to sleep in the cot. It was becoming a huge battle and some nights were better than others but if she wasn’t waking to come into the bed she was moving and banging into the cot and waking herself up. I tried lots of different methods including letting her cry but she would just end up in such a state that took even longer to calm her down from. A lot of the time I would let her settle and fall to sleep in the bed then move her back to the cot but it wasn’t ideal. Bedtime anytime from 11pm onward was really unpredictable and a bit of a nightmare.
We decided we needed to crack on with getting Amelia’s bedroom just for Amelia so she would have no option but to sleep on her own and in doing that along with her cot hating issues it just seemed fitting to go straight up to a big bed. Skipping the whole toddler bed phase as I think Amelia’s past that from sleeping in a double and I’m not that sure I see the point in another piece of furniture that only lasts a few years.
We’ve gone for the beautiful IKEA Hemnes day bed as it pulls out to a king sized for if we have guests or when my sister is home for the weekend.
I was feeling really positive about moving Amelia into a bed. It was going to be a fresh start for us both and hopefully an actual full nights sleep undisturbed for us both. We made the transition Saturday (04/04/2015). Removed the double bed and the cot and just had the single bed in there ready and waiting for Amelia. I was excited but nervous.
Amelia has had two nights in her big girl bed as I’m writing this and both have been successful. The first night she took about an hour to settle not crying or being noisy just faffing around throwing her cuddly toys on the floor, sussing out the bed guard and getting comfy she then slept through until the next morning without a peep! Second night she did get out of the bed a few times while she was settling and again took about an hour to go off to sleep but once she was asleep I didn’t hear from her until the next morning. Nap-time has also worked out okay so far! I’m so proud of how well she is doing, she’s so grown up.
I already feel like this was just the best decision we could have made to do it now. I hope I won’t be eating my words. I was in the mindset that no matter what she would be sleeping in that bed alone and I’m prepared to battle if I need to for a few weeks to crack it just like the newborn days, repetition of a routine. I’m hoping it won’t come to that but I’m really ready to sleep on my own and for us both to have real sleep instead of it being broken up and filled with bed hopping!
Amelia is loving her bed during the day-time too, she’s been sitting on it in the morning before getting dressed, it’s so cute. As well as a new bed Amelia’s room is being transformed into a toddler girls room. It is nearly finished and I can’t wait to share it with you all as I have loads of fun stuff to show!
When did your little one move from their cot or when do you think they will?
