New Years Eve at Longleat

We only went to Longleat a few months ago and had the best time. While we were there they were starting to put up all the lights for the Longleat Festival of Light so when some friends suggested going for New Years Eve I loved the idea.

Normally New Years Eve is spent waiting for the evening to arrive to consume far too much alcohol and spend far too much money on usually an average night. Don’t get me wrong I’ve had some brilliant New Years Eve’s but it was so nice to do something memorable with the last day of 2015 and have an amazing day with friends and Amelia.

We arrived for opening so we could get round the safari without it being to busy as we knew that would be the girls favourite bit. They loved coming in the front of the car and spotting all the animals. Of course their favourite bit was the monkeys jumping on the car! We did have some naughty monkeys who we caught in the act on our car which you can see the hilarious photo here.

The weather was really nice whilst we were driving round the safari which was lucky as it meant the girls could see most of the animals we pointed out. We even had a couple of lions walk right next to our car, they are huge!!

After doing the safari we went round the rest of the park looking at the other animals and we went on the boat to see the hippos and sea lions which Amelia loved! Last time we went they had the dinosaur exhibition on which was probably Amelia’s favourite bit and I thought they wouldn’t be there this time so you can imagine how excited Amelia was when she heard the dinosaur sound effects and spotted the T-Rex!!

The weather did turn a few times in the afternoon with some heavy showers but we came prepared for that so managed to time a long hot chocolate stop and early dinner time with that although it did start raining whilst we were on the little ride they have so thankfully it was over pretty quickly!

The lights for the Festival of Light came on around 4pm and I had heard great things so was excited to see them. It is Europe’s largest ever display of Chinese lanterns will once again transform Longleat into a glowing winter wonderland, with thousands of new lanterns and honestly it was absolutely stunning. None of the photos will do it justice I would definitely recommend going to see it for yourself!

There was so much more that I didn’t capture as there were so many different displays and it didn’t end as you walked along the lights ran through the trees and built up to the larger displays. Amelia loved spotting things she recognised but I think I probably appreciated it more!

There is also a singing Christmas Tree which is really fun, it sings some festive songs and the lights change to the music. It was starting to rain and it was really cold so we headed back toward the car to enjoy the fireworks. We had a really good view and to be honest it was better for the girls and then we were ready to leave as soon as they finished!

It was a really long day but an absolutely amazing send off to 2015.I would definitely recommend it as something to do on New Years Eve or go during the time they have the Festival of Light as it gives an extra touch to Longleat!
