The Royal Princess #RoyalLuncheon

This weekend I was super lucky to be invited on-board Princess Cruises Royal Princess to have a little tour of the ship, learn some more about the food and enjoy a delicious lunch!

Royal Princess, Leaving Southampton 9th June 2013

I’ve never been on a cruise ship before so for me this was such an experience  to not only see inside but to go behind the scenes and really experience a foodie day on the Royal Princess.

We were shown the galley of one of the restaurants which is probably cleanest, tidiest and most organised kitchen I’ve ever been in but to think that the ship feeds around 5000 people a day well it’s got to be organised! There are a team of 80 cleaners that clean the kitchen over night. The old weekend waitress inside of me was quite excited to hear the way they tackle service and how the waiters manage their sections but in full service I can imagine its pretty full on. The executive chef is David McDonald who joined Princess Cruises in 2009.

The galley we toured cooks for the restaurant in batches and cold starters are prepared before the first sitting so they are fresh and hot food is batch cooked to cut down on waste- in fact they work in tens and never try to waste any cooked food.  There are a number of different restaurants on the ship and a buffet style restaurant, snacks at the bars, pizza, gelato and freshly baked pastries.  We were then able to tour some more of the ship which was such an experience.

We then enjoyed cocktails at the Sea View Bar whilst munching popcorn and watching a little drinks show put on by the bartenders.

We were then shown some more of the ship including the kids clubs and the gorgeous hub of the ship the Piazza.

Then we went for our lunch at Sambatini’s.

To start I had the Chilled Seafood Assiette Sampler which was Lobster Medallions, Pickled Cucumber, Sour Cream and Caviar
Beet, Orange and Dill Cured Salmon Gravlax Ahi Tuna Poke with Avocado Dressed Baby Shrimps. It tasted delicious and looked absolutely stunning on the plate.

For the main course I chose the Rack of Lamb which was in a French Mustard Herb Crust,
served with Seasonal Baby Vegetables and Garlic Potato Tart with a Red Currant Reduction. It was cooked beautifully and tasted absolutely delicious.

For Dessert we were served the 50th Anniversary Chocolate Dessert. Which was a Chocolate Raspberry Mousse Heart, Creme Brulee and Crunchy Shortbread. It looked like perfection on a plate and was the perfect dessert for a chocolate lover like myself.

The entire day was such a wonderful experience and was nothing like I imagined. The food was absolutely delicious and completely overshot any expectations I had. You can find out more about the Dining on the Royal Princess here. My day on the Royal Princess has made me want to go back and definitely consider a cruise as a holiday!
