It has been a while since a top 10 post of mine, so I apologise for that but I am back this week to share with you my top 10 things to do in the garden. We are so fortunate to have a lovely big garden with plenty of space but lots of these things could be done on smaller scales to fit whatever outdoor space you have. These are all great things to keep Amelia entertained in the garden. Obviously there are lots of other things but these are Amelia’s faves and the things we love to do.
Hopefully with the sunshine here to stay we can do these things a lot more!
1. A Ball
This first one is just as simple as it’s title. Amelia loves a ball; tennis balls, footballs, any size as long as she can kick it, throw it and run around with it she loves it. She recently got a mini goal which she loves kicking her football into and we have really enjoyed using the Bubabloon outside. This is a great one for burning off some energy or just breaking up a a day inside with half hour fresh air running around and chasing with a ball.
Amelia loves getting her pretty flower windmills from the garage and placing them into the pots and the flower beds. She recently helped her Nana plant the hanging baskets and really enjoys watering
her feet the flowers! She walks to the tap with her mini watering can and says “mooooreee waaa pleaseeeee” how can you say no when she says please?! So we end up watering for ages. She loves it and I can’t wait for her to get more involved with helping in the garden as she gets bigger. She already has a little wheelbarrow which I’m sure she will love.
3. Sand Table
Amelia got this last year for her birthday and it has been amazing. You can obviously fill it with whatever you want but sand is great. Being brought up a beach baby we do tend to miss it if we haven’t gone for a few days so having this makes us both happy. This table is so sturdy, is just the right size and the closing lids are fab for keeping it clean. Amelia loves to scoop up the sand and build castles and just get stuck in really. This is a great one for her to play independently whilst Mumma enjoys a sit down!
4. Water Play
Going hand in hand with the sand table is the possibility of turning half of it into a water table too. Amelia loves water play and you can do this in a tonne of different ways. Pots and pans, a washing up bowl or a little paddling pool like we love to. Amelia loves tipping and filling up the buckets and has just figured out turning the tap on and off so I’m sure we will be doing a lot more play involving water. This is a really good one for the summer, as I can just see summer days being spent in the garden with all the garden bits out including the paddling pool.
5. Garden Equipment
We are slowly building up quite the collection of garden things. Slide, tunnel, tents and we use the paddling pool as a ball pit. Now that Amelia can do the slide herself we’ve been putting the bottom into the ball pit and she loves tumbling into the balls! Amelia is one for fairness so normally all of her stones/toys get a turn down the slide to.
This is another simple one that doesn’t cost a penny. Amelia is SUCH a hoarder and loves collecting things. It changes every day what she wants to collect; daisies, stones and sticks! She sometimes uses her little basket or she just shoves as much into her hands as possible and makes a little collection somewhere in the garden. She could keep herself entertained for hours doing this, she’s so funny!
This is a super fun one but can get pretty messy. We love taking the crafts outdoors; we’ve got some fab chalks for the pavement and we have done some painting outside. I thought it would make less mess but in fact it made more. Another great one is once she’s collected things to make a garden collage with them. Doing things like this outdoors just changes it up a little and makes it a bit different and more fun for Amelia.
8. Hide & Seek
Whenever Amelia has the chance she loves the play hiding “hide shh hide shh”. There aren’t to many places to hide in the garden but Amelia mostly hides in plain sight anyway, toddlers! There are more places to hide when we have the garden bits out like inside the tents or behind the slide!
9. Puddles & Bubbles
Super easy one for outdoors is bubbles. We’ve always got a bottle of bubble mix to hand as it is a great way to occupy Amelia. She loves running after them and shouting “pop, pop” and attempting to pop the bubbles. Amelia also loves it if we make puddles for her. We have a few pavement slabs that are slightly uneven which makes excellent spots for homemade puddles. Wellies on and get jumping Peppa Pig!
10. Tea Party
Another one of our favourite things to do outside is having a tea party/picnic lunch. Amelia has a lovely teepee that is so nice when the weather is dry and makes the perfect spot for a tea party/teddy bears picnic. It is lovely sometimes to take lunch outside and just throw a blanket down to change the scenery whilst eating your sandwiches!
So those are our favourite things to do in the garden! Lots of different things and all with fresh air help to tire out a toddler!
What things to do you love doing in the garden with your little ones?
